This publication is an anthology of nine essays by students of the MA in Cultural Management programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2023–24. The selected essays were written as part of the Cultural Development and Policy course, the only required course in the programme that emphasises the importance of civic engagement and the necessity to think at scale. The course enables a broader understanding of the role of cultural managers in a globalised and digital society.
The essays in this book explore various topics relevant to cultural managers today in Hong Kong and beyond, from cultural heritage and urban revitalisation, public space and creative space, private museums and soft power to digital economy and online subcultures. The book aims to spawn further research and inspire new ways of thinking about the role of the cultural manager in society in ways that help respond to and reshape the possibilities within the cultural field.
